They’re ridiculously cute and have super laid back personalities, just like her. 🏰 DISNEY: Disney movies, Disney music, Disney characters, Disney parks… she loves it all. Her bucket list includes visiting Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris one day. If you’ve had the chance to hang out with Emmy, you know that her smile can light up an entire room and that her laugh is infectious! A-T has made life complicated but she manages it all so impressively well. She is sugar and spice and fire and ice: she’s a kind soul who is always thinking of others but she’s also quick to correct you if you aren’t following the rules or doing what you’re supposed to be doing! Emmy has been battling the effects of A-T for 13 years now but it hasn’t stopped her from living her best life. She rarely complains about the things she can’t do and she has been blessed with amazing friends, family, and teachers in her life who have helped her see all the amazing things she CAN do! We continue to host our event every year because we are 100% in on TEAM EMMY! It’s hard to believe that this year will be our TENTH Rustic Run event. Over the past decade, A-T has progressively made life harder for Emmy but we are happy to report that she is as healthy as she can be and that we’re still fighting for a better future for our girl! Our community has continued to show up year after year and we have raised roughly $825,000 for the A-T Children’s Project. That number is absolutely astounding and it brings us SO much joy and hope that a cure can and will be found. Your donations are funding exciting clinical trials and top-notch research projects that are helping doctors and researchers learn more about A-T and the effects it has on the body. The whole reason we host our event each year is because our 13-year-old, Emmy, was diagnosed with an awful disease called ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T). A-T is a rare, neurodegenerative disease that attacks children. The first signs of the disease usually appear early in childhood and, though they usually start walking at a normal age, A-T kids wobble or sway when walking, standing or sitting. By school age they begin to develop difficulty with eye movement, slurred or distorted speech, and swallowing problems. Because the disease is degenerative, symptoms will continue to worsen as time passes. The disease affects virtually all bodily systems and the average A-T child is in need of a wheelchair by age 10-- not because their muscles are too weak but because they cannot control them. In addition, most A-T kids (70%) have immune system problems and all of them are much more susceptible to developing cancer; typically blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. The most pressing issue with A-T, though, is that there is no cure for it yet. That's why we're here-- to raise both awareness and funds so we can help put an end to this vicious disease. Summer is in full-swing (seriously… who turned up the heat?! 🥵) and this girl has been living it up at the pool. Emmy has always loved swimming and it’s probably because she’s able to do it without needing anyone’s help! A-T is relentless and takes away a lot of her independence but this is something that she has always been able to get out and do all by herself. At 13 years old, A-T plays a large role in Emmy’s daily life. She needs assistance with most daily tasks and has a hard time keeping up with everything going on around her… but that hasn’t stopped her from being completely Emmy. She’s sarcastic and witty, compassionate and thoughtful, and she’s still happily fueled by Chick-fil-a nuggets, mac & cheese, and chocolate milk whenever she can get it! And while she’s busy enjoying everything that summer has to offer, we’re busy getting plans together for our ✨10th✨ Rustic Run event this fall! Our event is just 9 short weeks away and we’d love for you to join us.
